When you speak of an operating system OEM means the same disk, but no box, no real manual, and no free tech support from MS. I always use OEM versions of software because the box is usually ugly and to flimsy to be of any further use, the manuals are poorly laid out and written, and I don't really care to sit on the phone listening to lousy music for an hour just to be told that it is somebody elses software or driver that is causing the problem with probably the greatest operating system ever written.

In other words you gain nothing. OEM and retail are same operating system, just different packaging. There is a difference between XP Pro and XP Home. If your PC currently has Home then depending upon what you do it may make sense to go to XP Pro.

well-I still want to do it
how to clean install? I like a fresh OS. I did follow the xp cd-but even though I format before I install I find that there still files from before I install-like games, my documents and program files. II would like to install a fresh OS with no more wasting of HD space because of the last installation. Actually I did it 4 times-and I have backup of things from before installing-for 4 times. AnnoyingHow to clean intall. |

When you boot with the XP CD and select install it should give your the option to format. But to have a completely clean drive, down load and run the zero fill utility from your HD manufacturer.
This will clean the drive of everything. All data and partitions. Chas |

LawyerRon, got you beat. Bro-in-law is M$oft employee. Microsoft company store....WinXP Pro...$38! Before you guys go gonzo and flood me with requests; He has a purchase limit and believe me he uses it. I barely got him to get this for me. BTW, I will have a copy of WinXP Home available soon.
