Defragmentation doesnt work?

A "client" brought me his comp to tweak. I did the usual stuff but when I got to the defrag part, it didnt do the job right. After numerous attempts to defrag I thought maybe their something wrong and decided to check here for answers.

I defraged his comp like 10 times. Windows Xp. Athlon 1700+

thanks

What exactly is the defrag doing? Is it not completing? Did you try running it in safe mode?

make sure to shut off all your programs running in the background (AV, etc.)

Its just like moving one file or two then comleting the process like normal but theres still lotsa red files and after doing another analyze it still says defrag again. Ill try that safe mode but how do we do that. Is that when we press delete then go to bios setup. when we exit it asks start in Safe Mode?

The things we learned about defrag (safe mode, turn off background stuff) do not apply with 2K and XP, you can defrag while working. Just keep running it and eventually it will clean up.

Under certain circumstances defrags in XP dont perform well, because of accessed files, security restrictions etc etc. As an alternative you could use Diskeeper and run the boot time defrag.

A good way to defrag XP is to download POWER DEFRAG
http://www.powerdefrag.com/

Is shareware but it's worth it
