Question Win XP on older Dell Notebook?

Hello,

I just purchased an older Dell CPI A366XT notebook with
the following specs:

CPU=Intel P2 @366 MHz
HDD=6.4 GB
RAM=128 Mb
Display=1024x768
256 bit video w/2.5 Mb Video RAM
CD-ROM, Floppy

This notebook came without an OS loaded. My question is;
is Windows XP a realistic OS for this notebook, or should I
go with Win 98? I need to purchase the OS and I would like to go with XP because it is more current than 98. The
Notebook does meet the minimum system requirements for XP listed on Microsoft’s website, but I have heard that those figures can be misleadingly low.

If needed, I can upgrade the RAM to 256 Mb.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Personally, I think 98SE would run better on that machine, increasing ram would definitely help, but XP is fairly large and isn't going to leave you much on that hard drive.

Increasing your RAM is way to go if you like XP get Pro and experience its features. Win 9X's are infamous when it comes to Freezes. If I were you I'd rather get the current OS. Last time I remember going to my 98SE on my dual boot system was almost a year ago and I dont want to use it anymore.
As I have been telling some members here my PC in the basement is P11 300mhz 128 MB 66 mhz speed with a WD 2.8GB HD is loaded with XP Pro and networked thru my wireless router. Its still work well for surfing the net, do the Office 2000 and other Photo applications and file and printer sharing. You've got a 6.8GB. IMHO that will do for a Notebook. again it depends on what are you going to use it though.

Thumbs up

Great, thanks for your opinions Redo40 & Jeresimo, I'm will
really just be using this notebook for Word, Excel and the
Web so XP might be okay since I won't be needing to much
of my HDD space. Thank you for the input, I really appreciate
it!!

On a machine that old I'd stay way from XP. I could barely run it on a 600 MHz PIII laptop with 160 MB of RAM. I'd suggest either Win98 SE or Win ME. Like you said, you'll only be using it for Word, Excel, and the Web so I don't think XP is really needed.

Thanks Surge1234, I appreciate your advice. I actually just won 98SE of Ebay so it looks like that's the OS it'll be. Thanks again!!
