Ok I had this problem on my 98SE machine a while ago, but now it started again. Basically whenever 'scanregw' is run (every time at startup) it says:
windows has encountered an error accessing the registry ... and then I have to reboot. I am plannin on reformatting anyway in a couple of weeks (when school ends) but is there a quicker way to fix this? thanks

whenever I have problems with my registry I use regcleaner.
9 times out of 10 it helps or solves the problem. http://www.jv16.org/ |

Just boot to command prompt using the F8 menu and U can run the command scanreg /fix and if that doesn't fix it U can run scanreg /restore and U will have 5 dated copies of your reg to restore from so if one is dated back before the problem then use it...

Can't save any settings... very annoying. |

If that doesn't work you can put your 98 cd in and run setup to the point that it checks your files and it will correct any problems with the registry, then just cancel and exit setup, reboot and everything should be good to go. I had this problem a year ago and replacing my memory fixed the problem, but it came back six months later. After alot of studying the problem I discovered that I was causing the problem by deleting registry entries with Spybot. I haven't had a problem since.

it was /fix - it took a while to repair all the files but it worked. I was worried the /restore wouldn't work because it didn't work in windows

I'm glad you have it fixed and I don't mean to worry you but that error is often the first sign of impending hard disk failure. Download the diagnostics for your hard disk and try them. Make regular backups of all your important files.
It probably won't die tomorrow but I think it is at the beginning of the end. |
