An even easier way is merely to rename the Messenger folder at C:\Program Files\Messenger to something else e.g. Messengerold.
That will also stop it running. |

The best way to get rid of messenger is to download and install XP Anti-Spy, that not only gets rid of it but also will rid your machine of stuff like .net services and others.

I'm guessing that you're talking about the Admin tool "Windows Messaging Service" and not "Window Messenger" as the two people already have guessed the latter...
Start - Run services.msc (and press Enter) You will see a list of Services, scroll down to "Messenger" and double click on it Underneath "Service Status" click STOP Then just above that, choose "DISABLED" instead of "Automatic" or "Manual" Then press OK, all should be well Cheers Jim

Thanks, FatBoyJim,
I had followed the same instructions posted previously, but had left it on manual. I changed to disabled and changed my homepage to Google, and one or the other did it! No-boxes Nirvana! This is going to make the computer a much nicer friend to play with! |

Re: Ditching the Messenger
See my post below. I have also downloaded Spybot Search and destroy. I still occasionally get popup boxes when I open certain advertisement-heavy web sites.
Any suggestions? Pollyanna PC Quote:

PollyannaPC,
Are they the same type of popup box? Or are they popups which are inside internet explorer? If they are the same type, then Messenger service hasn't been disabled, check Thanks Jim |

Jim, Wunderground.com is one of the sites that gives me a pop-up. The one that I got this morning is titled: Classmates-Registration-Microsoft Internet Explorer.
I did recheck Messenger and it is disabled. What do you think? This is so very frustrating! :-( Pollyanna PC |

That is a website popup, nothing to do with the Messenger service
There are some good software popup blockers available for Internet Explorer, I use a different browser though so don't use a blocker. I will have a look for popup blockers for you Jim |

Pop-up blockers
I have Spy Bot already. Can I leave it in place and add another one or will it require disabling it? It has been fairly effective, but obviously not infallible.

Spy Bot is a Spyware blocker, not a popup blocker. They are two different things.

Spyware- versus pop-up-blockers
Ah Ha! I learn something new every day. I figured that it was all the same. Thanks for the distinction.
In that case, is there any pop-up blocker you like better than the others? Pollyanna PC |

I do not use a popup blocker, I am not sure why not, but you can find them at any computer store (even Wal-Mart) for as little as $9.99. On AOL version 8.0, they added this feature to the browser, and it works really well.

Pop-up blockers
Jim,
I have looked for pop-up blockers and have found one from Norway, called Pop-up Inspector. Another one is: Pop-up Stopper with 4 different versions. The last one that interested me was: Historykill's Pop-Up Killer. I can't tell which would be the best to get. Some like Historykill, seems to do more than I need. I've nothing to hide on my computer. I just want to stop the pop-ups. Do you have an opinion on these or any others that may be suitable for my needs? Thanks for sharing your smarts Pollyanna PC |
