BIOS sees HDD, WinXP does not ?!?!

this is my first build.

i've managed to overcome a number of the usual first timer, bonehead miscues only to reach this ultra-bizarre response from windows xp (home) set-up.

the awards bios of the abit ic-7 recognizes the two ide devices i've installed (80 gig hdd and liteon cdrw), but windows xp set-up declares there is no hard disk ! !

what gives ?

Turn off anti-virus checking in BIOS setup.
Recheck your connections, although if BIOS sees it correctly, then it should work.
If you can't get the CD install to find it, grab a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com and fdisk the drive to create a full FAT32 partition. At least 10 gig for a full XP install. 7 if you're frugal.
Try the install again.

thanks.

i'll turn off the virus check in the bios, but the win xp
boot disk (with sp1) is a 4.19 mb file. i suppose i'm going
to have to split that up across 3 diskettes, and hope that
winxp set-up will recognize this and ask for the additional disks before continuing. i would hate for it to jump to the wrong conclusion

Can you provide a list of the parts you're using in this build...maybe someone will recognize something.

Are the drives jumpered to CS or CSel (cable select)? If you're using a 80 wire UltraATA66/100/133 IDE cable, your drives should be jumpered to CS. Blue connector to motherboard, black to drive you want as master, grey to slave.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic utilities and test your hard drive.

Make sure the HD isn't set to slave.
