I just performed a mainboard/processor upgrade on a PC that I am responsible for, and although I reformatted and re-installed Windows XP Home, when I try to activate it, it says "According to our records, the number of times you can activate Windows with this Product Key has been exceeded". It is *not* a pirated copy, and the Product Key is legit and this is the only PC I have used it on. Any ideas? I tried to get online support from MS, but you need a Passport.

It should have given U an 800 number to call, but perhaps not because of the message that U have exceeded the limit, but anyways search for the number and call it and they should help U by giving U an activation code...

call the number, you will go through an automated voice menu, and BAM, you're in.

Even if automated voice doesn’t give you a new activation code and you get transferred to a real person, just explain that you performed the upgrade and you should have no problem getting a new activation code. I’ve lost count as to how many times I have had to call.

Microsoft even says they will trust people to the fullest extent. I wouldn't be scared about it at all. As long as your product is purchased, then you shouldn't sweat it at all.

Well, the message said something about purchasing extra Product Keys, but I'll see if there is an 800 number. This has soured me a little on this whole activation process, but I guess it's the price I'll pay for all this 32-bit stability.
Thanks for the help, everyone.

Ya..... you don't have to purchase a new product key.... they admit, that's worded all wrong. They will ask why you need a new activation number, just tell them what you upgraded and they will give you one.

Well, I called, and "the system is down, and we can't activate any software right now". Give me a break!
(I've been using that smiley a lot in this thread)
