i installed red hat9 on a system which i already had xp on. i put rh on c: and xp is on d:. when i boot into xp, the system hangs and the screen looks like this:
Booting 'Windows XP' rootnoverify (hd1,0) chainloader +1 does anyone know what this means, or how i can fix it. also, if possible, can anyone tell me how to view my d drive in rh so i don't panic about the files still being there? thanks a lot and hopefully someone has some ansers for me. craig

How did you put Redhat on C: if XP was already on the system. If XP is already on system, that means XP would be on C: no? Tell me exactly how you installled Redhat, how you made XP into D: first and then installed Redhat onto C: and maybe we can retrace the steps for you.

xp pro was already on the d drive becuase windows 98 used to be on c. when i started the rh installation, it asked which drive i would like to install to. i picked c. it then asked which os i would like to be the default. i picked xp. so there were already two os's on the pc one on c one on d. i changed the one on c from 98 to rh9. no change to d. thanks for the help.

so basically if anyone knows how to edit commands in the boot menu, i think that would probably do the trick. i am guessing something is wrond in the scripting that was put in. or, if i had to, could i take out the c drive and it should just put into xp right? or would the boot menu still be there, and just have no place to go with the rh choice. can anyone at least tell me where i can access the d drive from in rh to ascertain whether or not i still have my files or if it is all gone. i am a complete linux newbie and have no idea what to do. thanks in advance

if it helps at all, i will include the current boot file (grub)
the bottom (xp) should be the default. it looks as if it has nowhere to go. here it is: # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd0,0) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdc2 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/hdc default=1 timeout=10 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz password --md5 $1$MfigXS3A$QOY2lGOhWDrTylO2.rZWp. title Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-8) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hda=ide-scsi hdb=ide-scsi initrd /initrd-2.4.20-8.img title Windows XP rootnoverify (hd1,0) chainloader +1 hope this helps craig |

You can try to boot into Recover Console with the Windows XP CD, and type 'fixmbr' at the command shell. But I'm not confident that it will fix your problem.
Looking at your situation, it seems like you have 2 physical hard drives. What you can do is replace Redhat with XP on C:. Your D: should be healthy, so you can read D: from Windows at C:. Transfer any data you want from D: to C:, and THEN install Redhat on D:. |

Format the drive, create a partiton for XP, Install XP. Once in XP create a primary partition of free space in disk management and install RH on it. You'll be done in about an hour and a half.

using the reocvery console, i was able to ascertain that i still have my files on the d drive, although i could not get into the folders because i said access was denied. if there is anyway to reinstall ntldr, i think that will do the trick, i am just not sure how. any ideas?
thanks craig |

ok, all you need to do is copy the file 'NTLDR' from the CD to your D:\ directory.
