Major XP Crash

I tried to do a system restore (not a reformat) back about 3 days and it totally crashed. now it is telling me that i can "try" to repair it and to install the os cd. It also tells me that the winsystem32\config\system file is missing.

so i go to repair it and i get to a command screen where i am instructed to choose which drive i want to repair, so i choose c and get a

c:windows> prompt

dose any one know what to do next? gateway told me to reformat and I just got married and all my wedding pictures are on this hard drive, my wife will kill me if i loose them ( don't have hem backed up yet)

also dose any one know why this happened.

one last detail i can not get windows to boot in safe mood either, it is stuck purely in a command prompt screen only.

thanks for any help anyone can offer

Wait for a bit and I'm sure someone will come up with an easier fix, ghost78. I am almost sure that thwere is a switch that you can enter at the C:\windows>, just don't know off the top of my head. Never had this prob.
