Norton Renew Causes XP not to boot...
I updated Norton and now my XP won't book. It will not boot into safe mode, it will sit on XP Pro screen with green running bar forever, and if I boot to my XP disk it will hang after it loads drivers, where it says, "starting windows." I've also tried "Last Known Good Configuration" and it didnt help. Do I need to boot to a win98 start-up disk? Help, please...

Boot in Safe Mode, holding down the F8 key during start-up, go Start>Run and type in msconfig
Go to the start-up tab and uncheck anything in the command line section that has Norton or Symantec showing. Restart and see if the computer boots. If it does you will need to go to www.symantec.com and check their technical pages for similiar problems. Also if you originally installed Norton System works you need to uninstall Norton Utilities and Cleansweep. Both of these programs are garbage anymore. |

I said it won't boot into safe mode and you try typing in msconfig into XP. Symantec doesn't have any documentation on any problems similiar to this. I would use something like startcop to keep Norton from starting but i cant even get into safe mode.

If you have an XP CD around, can it boot from that? . . . If that gets things started, you can try a system restore to a date before the Norton update, or you can try the repair reinstall = which is hairier, since then you'd have to redo your Service Packs & Critical Updates, and you need your cd key handy, and you have to re-activate the darn thing with Microsoft.
But you'd be in motion again . . . Gary |

No, tried that too. It freezes after it loads the drivers and is going to get to the menu page. It stops when it says "setup is starting windows". So I cant reinstall or choose repair. I can boot to a 98 startup disk. I uninstalled Norton manually, acording to the symantec web site, but it still won't boot.

check your cpu temp and fan as you may have a heat problam
allso remove your sound card and modem if pos and try to boot with just video card in the computer. you can also remove the side of the pc case and put a desk top fan blowing cold air in to the computer

When you updated Norton, did you use the subscription service on the website? Or did you do this in response to an E-Mail? A while back there was a virus that would come as an E-Mail stating that it was from Norton. Also there are virus/trojans out there that disable Norton from the get go. If you got one of these, it damages Norton's files and then when you tried the update it would mess everything up.
It is also possible that you had another failure at the same time and it just seems like Norton did it. |

Well, I just found out from the computer owner that this XP Pro is a Beta tester copy from way back. So Im thinking that is probably most of the problem. Im gonna reformat and install with a new XP disk.
