The mobo driver CD does not have it for 2000/XP it says to download on windows update. Is it in service pack 1 or something?

I had the same problem before, the solution was to install SP1 which had the needed drivers. This was for an Asus board.

SP1 takes forever to install and when it installs I have to format my HD. Isn't there another way I can get the USB2.0 working?

Admin edit: removed swearing.

Asus has the WinXP USB 2.0 drivers available for download here if your board uses the Intel ICH4 chip for the USB hub. VIA based USB 2.0 drivers aren't available for individual download as far as I can tell, you'll need to get SP1.

I don't think so, since the ports won't be detected in Device Manager. The board might come with some USB1.1 ports though, so those would work.

The only thing it doesn't detect is USB 2.0 Host Controller. I tried to update the driver but it won't find it on the CD. Should I just leave it like this? without the USB 2.0 driver.

I know it doesn't format the HD. The thing is when I downloaded SP1 it would restart and freeze on the loading screen. For some reason I can't boot directly to XP CD so I have to format.

Are you sure it was frozen? It took some time for SP1 to start installing, even on my fastest computer.

Ah, I thought you meant it would freeze at the SP1 installation window.

i was under the impression that if you formatted you lost all files programs etc.on hd so wouldn't that remove sp1 if it was downloaded prior to format?maybe i'm wrong.
