Go in to the System Restore settings and make sure that the box "Turn off System Restore" is not checked. Also make sure that the slider for the amount of disk space to use is set high enough. Reducing the amount of disk space it uses reduces the number of restore points.

Yes, that's exactly the way mine looks and it works OK. XP automatically it supposed to create restore points at certain times. Maybe you can run the repair function from the XP disk in case files are corrupted.

I have used the repair several times and I have not lost anything. You need to set the BIOS to boot from CDROM first, boot with your XP disk in. After setup loads a bunch of files you get an option to:
1. Set up Windows XP, press Enter.
2. Repair Windows XP, press R
3. To quit setup, press F3.
This should repair/replace damaged files without losing any files or settings. Of course when you back-up your important stuff, you are always safer. Don't forget when finished to set your hard drive as first boot device in BIOS.

By the Way, You can't just put the XP CD in while running Windows, you won't get the repair option unless you boot from the CD.
