fps limited in XP games?

i heard that XP limits your games to 60 fps and i read the thread about it at the top of the forum but i didn't understand how to fix it or if it still happens. can someone please tell me if XP still limits your fps or if updated drivers would fix everything. hopefully someone understands what im tryin to ask.

XP does not limit your fps, that is a misunderstanding

Well, in a sense it does. Games will default to 60 fps as the os doesn't have any reason to run the game any faster. You could blame M$ for it just as you could blame the game writers.
Some games have a console setting or a string to set a specific frame rate, or you could use a tweak such as nvreftool for nvid cards, or reflock for any card.

It limits your refresh rate to 60Hz, not your frame rate. You can download different programs for your video card to cure this problem.

I believe Hal9000 is correct.
I run Nascar N2003 anywhere from 55 FPS (a lot of cars and features in view) to 94 FPS (just me in a open area of the track)

Hal is correct: XP defaults to a 60 Hz refresh rate for the monitor when games use fullscreen mode. Some games let you fix this from within the game. Otherwise, you need other software to fix it. I think that the newest nVidia drivers allow you to fix this problem on nVidia cards.

thanks guys. i was thinking it was kind of ludicris to have your fps limited, but knowing that it is just your refresh rate AND that it can be fixed makes me feel a lot better about switchin over to XP (since I'm still runnin 98.2 here).

The drivers from ATI have a setting that overides the default refresh rate. You can lock it at whatever you want.
