XP vs 2000

I know they're very similar to each other; I've heard people remark how XP is just 2000 with a new VGUI.

What are the differences?

Are there any performance gaines from upgrading from 2000 to XP?

i have both xp pro and w2k pro,xp boots a little faster but the main things i like about xp are the systems restore and it accepts software that w2k rejects.other than that i find little difference.if i were going to buy i would get xp home.

Since XP is newer, and since 2K was always seen as more of a business OS than a home OS, XP should be better for games because software makers have been specifically writing games for XP for a while now. However, there shouldn't be a great difference between the two.

With 2k I can disable unneeded services and go from around 100 megs taken by the os to 64. In xp I have never seen any drop in memory that is cached by the os alone, no matter how many services were disabled it stays at 128.....
So 2k may run a bit better on a resource limited system, or if one just wanted to limit the mem taken by the os/cacheing alone.

XP has much better driver support although there are still some companies (Sony) that don't have XP drivers yet. Installation and adding new hardware is much smoother in XP. You won't see much performance gains with XP, although because of it's improved GUI, it feels faster. XP is quite a bit more of a nag than 2K. It is constantly trying to get you to do this and that. Also XP requires product activation unlike 2K.

I belive XP is more user friendly for the average Windows user, I mean you don't have to be real tech savy as Win 2000 is more for the proffesional user.

XP is definately more plug-and-play adaptable, user-friendly, and has a noticable performance difference for 2d & 3d graphics, film, and gaming.

But, XP does have that annoying messenger that tries to send info on your system to MS. I don't like that.

And as doctorgonzo said, 2k is more of a business O/S. XP has a more streamlined feel to it.
