Windows 98 SE.
And it is also better for gaming.

Personally.... with everyone knocking WinME... I had never had a problem with it. I didn't find it any less stable that Win98, I didn't find it gamed any better or worse, and it's actually still on my second machine because video capture is not supported under XP with my older ATI AIW card. I still run it on my bench machine at work too... both machines running 24/7.

Both of them CAN be very stable, the trick is to protect the original .dll files. When I was using ME, I learned that after you finished loading all the software it was best to do an over-install of ME again.
I had it on my daughters machine for over a year and she downloaded all sorts of garbage and it never hicupped. I really feel that most of the bad press came from rumors that just continued to build. I remember reading, when it first came out, a lot of critizism of the interface looking kiddieish. And from there the rumors just grew. Fact is that ME is still basically 98SE at it's core files, so it is just as stable or just as shakey as 98SE. Last edited by morriswindgate; 06-11-2003 at 08:33 AM. |

98SE. My experience with ME hasn't been very good.

Someone gave me a copy of ME years ago and it still sits unused in my software box. For me, there was no point in doing an upgrade. My 98SE box runs just fine.
If I installed ME, I would be doing the same thing. I just surf the net and word process. Fairly simple tasks. So the only thing upgrading would do for me is cause headaches trying to retune everything. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! |

I prefer Win 98.2. I tried ME and just didn't like it. I'm not slaming ME, just like Win 98.2 better.

Once I learned not to install every "free" file and program "designed to make my internet experience more enjoyable" I found that 98se AND ME ran with less hiccups.

The only problems I ever had with WinME were AMD systems when used in conjunction with a VIA chipset. Don't get me wrong here, not trying to start and AMD/Intel war... this was just my experience with systems leaving my store. If people got an AMD/VIA combo.... to reduce headaches, I recommended Windows 98... The WinME systems were just flakey with that combo but worked great on Intel/BX/815 chipsets.

I have been running me for almost two years now and I dont find it any less stable than 98se. Have about the same sort of problems from time to time with both. The only thing that really pees me off though is the restore feature in me, never works when you need it to work" usually I end up doing a format and reinstall. I like me but I find 98se equally as good.

There is a bug in the ME restore function, be sure to download the System Restore Patch from MS.

I, personally, don't like either version of the OS. They both can become very unstable. However, Windows ME does have more preventative measures that it will take when it comes to crashes, missing system files, etc... And about the gaming, I couldn't find a difference when I tested Windows 98 and Windows ME. Both of these versions of the Windows OS have their own little conflicts and bugs in them.

Allthough i guess judging may be over on this subject i do belive that Windows 98Se would be a better choice. I have seen 98 and ME side by side and watched as they work. ME has too many bugs in it and it crashes alot. A freind of mine had to reformat his HD about 1 time a week because ME would screw up for him beyond his control

No way would I ever install ME on anything of mine ever again. Only my personal opinion, but I will say that if your lucky enough to get either one running flawless I think that ME will need higher system requirements. (cpu, ram, hdd size, ect...)
