WinXP wants to remove hardware that works perfectly ?!?
specifically, my usb cable modem; the same modem i'm using to connect with and type this message out.
i've downloaded the usb modem drivers from rca.com (modem manufacturer), and still this message persists. the message consists of an icon in the systray that will not go away, unless i remove the offending piece of hardware. this is newly built system: abit ic-7, 2.4c, 1 gig of mushkin 2.5cl, 9700 non-pro. any clues ? |

When you attach a USB device to XP you will get an Icon in the system tray. The purpose of this feature is to allow you to stop (turnoff the device) before you remove it. You should have an entry in this box for all usb devices you have attached to the computer, so when you want to remove the device you highlight it and click the stop button, XP will then turn off the device and you can then unplug it.
What you describe is normal. |

when i float the cursor over this icon it reads 'Safely Remove Hardware', and nothing else. It lists, as you say, the only USB device i've connected to this machine - the RCA cable digital cable modem - but i find this message to be so bizarre. at the very least i expect the icon to display device name, maybe a little window into the device's functionality/stability, or something, anything, other than to 'Safely Remove Hardware'. I just don't see the reason. perhaps its just me. I dunno. and the icon is hideous ! ! ! !

Yes, that icon is for exactly what morris describes.
For a USB modem, that icon may not make a lot of sense, but it is mainly for devices like USB pen drives that need to be stopped before you can safely remove them. Just ignore it if it bothers you. |

Yep, that's normal. I even get that icon when I plug my Digital Cam to upload my pix via my USB port.
