slow win xp

A friend has a packard bell nec computer of which specs are, 256 mb ram,win xp home ed, the problem arises when she tries to work on a scanned picture in paint shop pro each click to perform a task for eg putting a text box it will take forever.
I have done the following defragged, checked cpu usage, uninstalled real player, tried disk clean up stalled at compressed old files but i think that could be another matter. After the computer seems to slow down for other applications. also uninstalled and reinstalled scanner.

That translates to CPU speed, CPU Cache, Hard drive speed, how many programs/services are running in the background and Video Card capability, not XP.

To help end processes, go to the "Run" dialouge box, type "msconfig", go to the startup tab, and uncheck everything. Then try this: (Window Washer)
http://webroot.com/wb/products/windowwasher/index.php
After you download, run it, it will clear up ALOT of space, thus your system will run faster. Try Disk Keeper instead of the normal M$ defrag, and hopefully it will run fater....
Hope That Helps,
-Joe
