What are your system specs?

How are you installing WinXP...from the CD or are you using a boot/setup floppy?

How big is the partition you're trying to install WinXP to?

What have you tried to resolve this issue?

Hi Cricket,
I have tried booting from CD first and nothing at all happens. I have a 80gig WD hdd that I think I formatted using a WinXp custom install boot disk that I downloaded of the internet. When I fdisked I only chose a single partion.

I have downloaded the 6 disk boot up disks but did not try them yet.

My comp is:

asus board a7v8x-x
athlon 2000 1.67
80gig WD
256 mg pc2700
soundblaster 5.1
64mb nvidia agp
dvd
cdrw
floppy

Is the hard drive jumpered properly? If you're using a 80 wire UltraATA IDE cable, the drive should be jumpered to CS or CSel (cable select). Blue connector to motherboard, black to hard drive and grey slave. Check here for jumper settings.

Have you gotten the one good BIOS beep from the system yet?

Are you sure the DVD or CD-RW (whichever you're trying to install WinXP from) works?

I would put the hard drive as master on the primary IDE channel and the DVD as master on the secondary IDE channel (with no other drives) and try to boot from the CD-ROM again.

Hey Cricket

Ive checked and I do get one good bios beep. My hdd is primary master and dvd secondary master everything is ligthing up correctly and all wires look correctly placed. I am going to double check my jumper settings on the hdd but bios is reading it and does detect it so im assuming thats a good sign.

Are you using a genuine Microsoft Windows XP OS installation CD?

How are you trying to boot from the CD? Is the CD-ROM selected as the first boot device in BIOS?

How did you partition the hard drive?

What file system was it formatted as?

Are you sure the system is trying to boot from the CD-ROM drive (DVD) and not the hard drive?

Is the DVD jumpered properly for the type of IDE cable you're using? 80 wire UltraATA would use CS and 40 wire ATA would use master.

Are the drives recognized by the BIOS?

not really, what happened is if you never had a o/s on that drive before, you had started a xp install and not finished it, then did a second one.

yes it can be removed by editing the bootinf file

I cannot tell you how to do that this late at night, not thinking clearly enough and don't want you to mess it up.
you can get help on that later ok
