can't double click to open things in xp

when i double click on a folder or file in windows, it does what it would do if i right clicked and opened the properties. what's going on? it doesn't seem to be my mouse. it works fine when i left click on anything on the task bar or the internet. i can still open programs by right clicking and clicking open. this is really weird and very annoying. any help? -Reuben

Check to see if the mouse's double click speed is set to the fastest setting...if it is, move the slider to the middle and see if you can double click at your normal speed to get programs to open.
