Adding an OS
I'm using win2k pro and want to add win98 onto a partitioned drive. when I threw in the win98 cd, I got the message that it was an incompatible version. I'm sure that this can be done, so what am I doing wrong?

If the partitions are NTFS, then Win98 won't work....At least the partition U R going to put Win98 on has to be FAT32..

As ktkendall you need to format whatever partition you are putting Windows 98 on as FAT or FAT32 (FAT32 prefered). Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS partitions at all. (Although Windows 2000/XP support FAT and FAT32...backwards compatibility)
Another thing to consider: If you install Windows 98 over Windows NT/2000, Windows 98 will re-write your bootsector without any regard to any other operating systems (this will make NT/200/XP unaccessable). You will then either have to use the Windows 2000 Emergency Boot disks or CD to recover the boot-sector (this process should automatically setup the bootloader and boot.ini files so you can "dual boot" as well) I made an article to dual boot 98 and NT a year or so back. The basic concept still applies. http://www.pcmech.com/show/os/44/ |

The partition is set up as fat32. And actually I don't want to replace win2k, I just want to be able to have the option of booting into win98 if I want. Some of our games at home are incompatible with 2000. I thought it was possible to select an os at startup

It is possible, but you'll have to setup the boot manager manually, since you have the newer O/S already installed. W98's installation doesn't know how to fix the W2K boot config for dual boot. Cruise over to http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm and pick up BOOTPART, it'll allow you to slide W98 into a W2K installation.

The best way to do this is set up the partitions, then install the oldest operating system first. You are not doing it this way so the above is correct.
