quick answer: how do i format in Fat (Fat16)
i need to install win 95 ona hard drive but win95 needs Fat16 (or just fat, whatever its called) i have a 98 disk but when i format it does fat32.... anyone know how i can format a drive in fat16? tia

Run fdisk, and when asked if you want large disk support, select NO. This will force a 2 gig FAT16 partition on the drive.
You can then partition the rest of the drive in FAT, or FAT32. |

so i'll have a 2 gig partition? why can't i do just do FAT for the whole drive? if it won't handle it then why after the partition can i do the rest of the drive in FAT? tia

FAT16 can only calculate a maximum drive size of 2Gb.... there's no way past that without going FAT32..... even if you could... why would you want to... to go larger than 2Gb in fat 16, the cluster size would have to be 128 kilobytes which would lead to huge amounts of waste on your drive... think about it.... a 4k file would take up 128k of space... a 132k file would nuke 256k space.

though im still a lil unclear about sectors and cluster sizes and why it would have to be 128k, i kinda understand so thanx HAL
