Never seen it before. But maybe if a few things were deleted from one of the .bat or .sys startup files (which show just after the POST), they're leftovers? If you're certain that it's the Bios POST screens, which Bios & board do you have?

It displays towards the bottom of the black post screen, just above the board identification (i.e. American Megatrends with the numbers underneath). Board is M748MR with BIOS revision of 1/25/99. It's an older PII machine. |

Besides the weird symbols displayed during POST, does your computer boot to Windows and run properly?
Is that a PC Chips motherboard? Cricket

Yeah it's pcchips. On occasion it was not finding the hard drive and taking long to get into the OS. After cleaning out the OS (spyware, etc), it's running much nicer but still has those 4 characters.

Cricket - you have an amazing memory. Thanks for humoring my endless curiousity
scooby - I suppose if you are sure that it's from the Bios POST screen, you could flash the Bios with an update and see what happens. Use a clean write-protected floppy when you do. But first you might scan again & doublecheck that there's no virus that snuck back in to the system. And if you're not comfortable with flashing the Bios, don't: though I'm guessing your experience level is advanced enough. Just be careful, and hope there's no power surges/outages in your area when you try it (no electrical storms!). . . Best of luck . . . Gary |
