Hey, it's been awhile... How do I know exactly what drivers I need before I reformat? I made a GHOST of what I have, but I'm still timid. I don't know what windows has and does not have. Is there a main directory for drivers somewhere in windows? (currently using 98 and will probably reinstall 98).

The Ghost image should work fine. Windows has everything it needs. If it's a "homebuilt" unit you would need the drivers for video, sound, etc.

If you have a Ghost image already, you can just use that to restore the system to whatever state it was in when you made the image. The Ghost image was made of the system in question, right?
Oh, you don't need to fdisk or format before you run Ghost to restore the system with the image. You can just run Ghost from DOS or from a full DOS windows while in Windows. Did you add or remove any hardware after you made the Ghost image? If you plan to format and install Windows, tell us your system specs (include brand name and model numbers of all the parts in your computer if you know them) and what OS you're using. We can pretty much tell you which drivers you'll need and where to get them. Cricket

Go to the link below and download/install/runn WinDriver Backup. Then just burn the folder it makes to a disk. The folder will contain all the drivers on your system.

Yes... that's what I was looking for. I knew there would be some kind of trick. Thank you, I'll try that.

next problemo
okie dokie... well, now that I've fdisk'd and rebooted, I can't get back in to either format or fdisk - it says "incorrect ms-dos version". It looks like I downloaded the wrong boot disk (ME instead of 98) and copied the format and fdisk from 98. Is this the problem? Also, I can get into GHOST, but it's only recognizing my two hard drives as valid. It can't see the cdrom. Is this because there is no cd-rom driver without windows and I have the wrong boot disk? I've tried booting from cdrom, e, and f and they all fail and tell me to hit any key to restart.
My next dilemma is that I'm now on a mac laptop with no floppy drive. I could go to kinko's to download, but I'm not sure what exactly I need and I don't want to spend an hour trying to figure it out at kinko's. Please help. ThanX |

bootdisk.com
Okay, looks like I can get what I need from bootdisk.com... lemme try that and I'll tell you how it goes. Anyone know the difference between 'OEM' and 'Custom/No RAM drive'?

I've gotten to the point of reinstalling Win (98SE). I've fdisk'd and formatted and found a boot disk to enable CDRom support...
When I open setup for windows, it goes through the "setup is prearing the wizard which will guide you through the rest of the process..." and immediately after it says 100% complete the computer gives a dos beep (directly from the computer) and freezes. Any ideas?? |

When I used Windows 98, I always found it easier to pull all the expansion cards (except for the video card) and disable any onboard sound, Lan, USB, and Firewire until the OS install was completed. Then add each card one at a time or enable each on-board one at a time until the drives were installed for each.
Before you do this you should install the motherboard and video drivers first. |
