whats the norm on file versions?

When running SFC on 98se, should I always choose the higher numbered version or does it matter? Plus, how did they change in the first place? Will I run into any problems by choosing a higher version? thanks!

Question

What is SFC? San Fransisco Chronicle? Senior's Folly Club?

If you're talking about versions of programs or games such as v5.1 and v5.2, the higher number AFTER the decimal is always better, because that means there are usually bug fixes and such. If you're talking about different versions BEFORE the decimal, such as v3.2 or 5.0, you have a debate. I personally am a little skeptical because newer versions of some programs often come with more unnecessary tools that usually are a waste of RAM. But it mostly depends on what it is you're installing and the specifics of each version.

As I'm writing this, I suddenly feel that it's possible I'm missing your question completely... let me know if I am just babbling here.

sfc system file checker

I've only ran this thing once, and i vaguely remember it asking if I wanted to leave the existing version or go to the previous one. Sometimes the previous had a higher v. number and I didn't know if I should switch or not. What's the best thing to do and can I cause any unwanted grief?

oh, in that case...

the clouds are shifting, I think there's sunlight coming in.

Are you having problems with any programs? Have you installed anything recently?

Hey Sam,
That can be a hard question to answer, I would think it depends on the file, if your having any troubles that the file is connected to...etc. Under normal conditions I would think the newer version would be better as alot of programs install newer versions of files when installed.

I'd use System File Checker with caution. It'll find all system files that has been changed since Win98 was installed...it doesn't discriminate and doesn't elaborate...it just tells you all the files that have been changed...even the ones that are updated when you run Windows Update. It doesn't look for files that have been changed and are causing system problems...it finds all systems files that have been changed. I don't use it (unless it's to extract an exact file from the Win98 cab files) and don't recommend using it unless you're trying to track down a specific system problem. Don't use it as part of your regular system maintenance.
