no, not really, its my moms computer and she is running out of space. And I read somewhere that you should disable virtual memory before a defrag

What turning off virtual memory before a defrag does is allows all the regular files to be bunched together without the reserved swap file spaces interspaced between them. Then when you re-enable virtual memory, it'll be in one continous space by itself (at first, but since virtual memory is dynamic, it could reserve more space all over the hard drive again when it needs it. To avoid that, you could lock the size of the swap file). I don't see how that would save space though.
Don't leave virtual memory disabled if that PC doesn't have much RAM or you'll get lots of system crashes. Has the Windows Temp folder been cleaned out lately? And check the size of the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files folder and set the size to something more reasonable...like 50MB or something. Cricket

As Cricket says, defragmenting the hard drive is a good idea. But it won't fix your space problem, and you may encounter problems when turning off Virtual Memory, how much RAM does the machine have?
Thanks, Jim |

Hmm, I'll take it from that you mean 128 MB
![]() Unless the machine happens to be kept on a space the size of a tennis court... and can beat Kasparov at chess :O OK, enough. With 128MB RAM I would leave virtual memory on, at least until you find a comfortable medium (ie. Windows never wants to increase the swap file and you are happy with the size of it) HTH, Thanks Jim |

But if you meant 128 megabytes of RAM, don't leave virtual memory disabled...just disable it when you're defragging. Cricket
