hey blue,

i myself have a 9gig partition with 6.5 gigs free... that means i have 2.5 gigs of used space, which include all my utilities like, winzip, quicktime, realplayer... and a game demo or two, so really a 5 gig partition would work just fine.... of course i must mention i save all my personal files to another partition and have moved my virtual memory into my physical memory, thereby not fragmenting my drive and not taking up any of my space, plus it accesses faster b/c it's all in my RAM.... but anyway, back to your question, a 5 gig partition should work fine

It depends.... How much HD space do you have?
How many partitions will you have?
Will you install all data and programs in other partitions?
How good are programs at installing themselves only to where you want, and not clutter up your 'C' drive?

and so on...

To be safe, I'd say at least 3 - 4 gig.

For example, I run Win 98.2 and install all data and programs to other partitions, and my 'C' drive still has 2.5 gig of stuff on it.

HTH

don't I feel like a caveman...

well, it just so happens that I'm working with two separate hard drives - one ~3gig and one ~2gig, so maybe I should leave it alone. The problem I've been running into seems to be with the 2nd hard drive - it seems like it's a hardware failure. Sometimes when I engage it, it makes this continuous clicking noise about every second like it's asking for something and not getting an answer. So, I thought - until I get a new hard drive - that I would make a second partition on the first. Is there a way to test it? Whenever I run a full scandisk on it, it says there are bad sectors and marks them unuseable but I continue to have problems. Is it just bad?

ThanX

Bad sectors is like cancer to a hard drive...they'll keep multiplying until the hard drive is unusable.

If you know the brand of that hard drive, you can go to the manufacturer's website and download the hard drive diagnostic utilities to test the hard drive with.

But it really sounds as if that hard drive has had it...time to get another hard drive.

2 and 3 gig hard drives? those are small and must be older drives that definately aren't as fast as neewer ones, so i'd say get a new HD

I have to agree with both of the above, BlueKrystal22. Ya the drive is going "bye-bye," and with drives that size, you're severly limited, so that's a second reason to "upgrade."
