defrag in win2k

when i try to defrag my hard drive in win2k pro, i keep getting the message that the drive contents have changed, and is restarting. Ive been told to make defrag run on startup before the desktop comes up by putting a key into the registry, could someone tell me what to type to make it work...

thanks

Run defrag from Safe Mode. While booting up, keep hitting F8 after the first boot screen switches to the next. From the Boot Menu, select Safe Mode.
