I'm pretty sure I read this elsewhere here, but I couldn't find it back. When formatting and partitioning new Maxtor HDD on new bld, I should just use the XP utility when I set up my OS instead of trying to use the MaxBlast software. Agree or disagree?
Thx.

Ditch MaxBlast.
Put the cd-rom first in boot order and go from there. It will do everything you need. |

I never use the utilities the manufacturers provide. To me is easier with the Windows CD or with FDISK in case it's a Win9x system.

Sorry Kov-Ice,
Hang around here long enough and you take the tech forgranted. Set the CD to first in the bios. When you load it will ask about FDisk and formatting. Follow instructions and begin from there. This is a total wipe, you've got a blank slate. |

Agreed on the MaxBlast: lose it. But I believe I remember reading in one of the posts here, that XP can't do certain sizes and / or numbers of partitions!?!?!? In FAT32, at least. Anyone know the exact details, as it may apply here?

Hi pam123 (or do you prefer, "pam"?), got a link on that? I'd like to read a little more on it.
Thanks ![]() TwoRails |

No prob pam123, I knew what you meant. As for partitions, I read somewhere here that XP is best kept in its own (4-8 GB according to most.) Then I'll partition the rest of my drive space out as needed I guess.
Regarding file system, I asked another question here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...907#post474907 I'm still deciding which to use, but I think Nuke said NTFS is the way to go. Over a network connection there should be no probs. Thx all. |

The security from data corruption due to blackouts and lockups is far better with ntfs, and the speed diff is slight. Why not use it?

Blakhart, the link in my previous post kinda describes my plight. Just trying to figure out what is best to use for the sake of networking old 98se machine as a workstation to this new XP bld.
Thoughts? |

File system has absolutely NO bearing on networking 98 and XP.
Use NTFS if you don't mess with things too much, but it won't be recoverable in DOS if it crashes beyond normal repair options. FAT32 can be recovered with a DOS boot disk (in most cases). |

What exactly do you mean "mess with things too much"? As long as I keep current on my back-ups, that won't be an issue right?
