If I'm setting up a 98se workstation and planning on networking it to my new XP machine, am I right in my understanding that I need to partition XP in FAT32? Otherwise, I will be unable to file share between the two? Or do I go with NTFS and then just transfer files thru use of a CD-R if need be?
Thx.

AFAIK the file system won't matter since it's a network.
You can partition your XP machine with NTFS and there would be no problem.

NTFS will be able to read FAT32, but FAT32 will not be able to read NTFS.

But that only happens on the same machine. I.e.: in a dual boot system.
Over a network there is no problem. Take for example those Mac and Win98 systems connected to Win2000 servers. |

So when you have a duel boot system(Windows 98SE and Windows XP) You have an NTFS partition and a FAT32 partition. You log onto XP and you create an extended NTFS partition and you put some files in there. Then you reboot the system and go into 98SE. Now, you will not be able to see that NTFS partition that you made..So my question is..
How is this possible if your on a network? Same scenerio..NTFS and FAT32. |

That's the root of my question as well.
However, since most files will be going from 98se workstation to XP machine, there should be no probs reading files transferred anyway. My trouble would be if I had to move anything from XP to 98se. If that was the case, don't all CD-RW write in FAT32 so I could transfer that way? |

Marko, found an answer here:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...hoot/myths.htm "Misconception: Windows 95 can't read a shared disk on another networked computer if the disk uses the FAT32 or NTFS file system. Windows 95/98/Me can't read a shared disk on another networked computer if the disk uses the NTFS file system. Fact: The file system of a shared disk is irrelevant. Every computer knows how to read its own disk and make its contents available to other computers over the network. Explanation : The original release of Windows 95 can't read a FAT32 partition on its own local hard disk. Windows 95/98/Me can't read an NTFS partition on their own local hard disks. These restrictions don’t apply to networked disk access." So I go with NTFS on my XP! |
