Question Ram for XP

What is the recommended RAM for running XP? I've heard that it will run with 256mb but 512 is recommended. I'm on my sister's computer which has XP with 128mb and it's very sluggish and I was thinking that this may be the problem.
A second question.
This may sound silly, but my computer at home is win98se and has scandisk. I haven't found scandisk on XP. Is there an equivelant in XP or was it left out completely for whatever reason? Forgive me but I'm not too familiar with XP.

256 is my minimum for XP and scandisk in XP it is called error-ckecking and can be found by right clicking on the drive properties and then under tools.

What I have seen is that with XP on a 128mb system when you get just the desktop and the required services running you will only have 10 to 14 MB of RAM free.

Hi ! From Fort Worth Texas

Listen plumerjr, the BEST thing that you could ever do for your computer is to put 512 ram in it !!. When I bought this Pavilion 3 years ago it had Windows 98. It was doing fine but crashed a little. When ME came out, I went down on the first day it came out and bought it. I had 64 Ram. Well , the crashes were coming pretty good so I put 128 Ram and that helped but I still had a few crashes. When XP came out , I bought it on the first day it came out. I saw in the paper that ram was real cheap and I put 2-- 256 RAM cards in. Trust me , putting 512 in is worth it. If you have to beg , borrow, or steal, GET the money and put 512 RAM in !. You will NEVER regret it. The crashes are almost nil, but the crashes I have had was the sofwares fault that I just downloaded or it was my fault when I confused the computer by clicking on a thousand things at one time that I wanted. Just clicking to fast. O-- some of those crashes were CompuServe's fault. So, put in he 512 RAM now. If I weren't living off Social Security each month , I would send you the money so that you would see.------------Donald

P.S.: O---don't really steal as I said above---OK

basic rule of thumb is
the more ram you got the better it will run,

I will not even build a computer with less than 512 in it

Yes I found the "error checking" thank you. Ok I was just double-checking on the ram. Thank you all for the imput. My sister agreed to buy more ram next weekend, I'll suggest the highest amount she can afford.
