No, you'll have to install ME over XP and re-intall all the applications.

doing that would be a big mistake,
I would rather see you fix what is slowing it down than go to me can you give us some information on your system so we can help you find what the problem is. |

It is probably a lack of memory that is causing it to be slow depending on which Celeron is installed. A 300A probably wont run xp very fast no matter how much memory you install.

ok
now we are getting somewhere do you know what the speed of the celeron cpu is and how much memory is installed in it it may be possible that if it was designed for w98, it may not have the guts to run xp. if that proves to be the case, disreguard my first post. |

As it is a compaq, you should have a 'restore disk'. At this point your best solution would be to back up anything that you do not want to lose and then use the restore disk, it will wipe the drive and take the unit back to 'just out of the box' software wise (sorry, the scratches and blemishes stay)
Now before you go an do that , if you can tell us what system it is - then we can make a determination of whether simply hitting www.crucial.com and buying more ram would make this a snappier unit, or if you are really over loading the sytem with an OS such as XP. Upgrading RAM is still relativley easy on a laptop, and RAM prices are low right now. Adding more ram to a system with not enough (And XP really needs 256 MB of ram to avoid using the hard drive so much) can be amazingly effective. Last edited by sdkfz; 06-23-2003 at 12:07 PM. |

if you go to the crucial site they have a tool called belearc advisor, download that and it will tell you more than you want to know about the computer, if that is not enough info. search on google for sisoft sandra and that will tell you even more stuff about your pc. It includes some general hints on speeding up the pc also, (one hint is to remove itself!)
