Recurring STOP: error message
Need some help, folks. I can't seem to find the cause of a recurring BSOD STOP: error code. I have written down every time it has happened and what I was doing. Most often it is when I have multiple IE screens open. This time I was looking at the link Wolfie had supplied for the new Catalyst ATI driver. Here's the error message: STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF915DOB, 0xF5497078, 0x00000000).
The first, second and fifth groups of numbers are always the same. The third and fourth vary. This time is the first time I have received an additional line after the STOP: It was: Win32k.sys - Address BF915DOB base at BF800000, DateStamp3db6d462. Nothing matches at MS Knowledge base, all drivers are up to date, no irq or device conflicts, tested ram with Sandra, tested CPU w/ Prime 95, run spybot and adaware regularly as well as reghealer, and keep all partitions defragged. Maybe unrelated, but I've also been experiencing an increasing number of IE shutdowns (need to close). I can reopen and most times it will run again. If not I reboot and the problem is gone. Hopefully, someone has some guidance.

Have you installed any new software lately,if so there could be a conflict with it,also you may try going to my computer>right click>properties>tools and perform an error check, this may help.

Have you run the PC with only one stick of ram at a time you may have a bad stick. I wouldn't trust Sandra to test the memory especially if the memory is going in an XP box.

Thanx for the ideas guys.
Eldon, I don't seem to get to tools that way on XP home, but you did remind me about Event Viewer in Admin Tools. I did some more reading and printed out some instructions for next time this happens. Jimmie, I misspoke about the ram test. I used Docmemory and let it run for quite a while. It passed every test. I may still take your advice and see if one or the other stick fails. The only concern I have is that it sometimes goes days without a glitch. Not sure how long I would wait to proclaim whether a stick is good or bad. Think I'll try to use the Event Viewer Troubleshooting suggestions for now. Again, thanx, gents. |

Just an update for those that are interested. Lil Jimmie hit the nail on the head. I did some more web searching and everything I found related to my stop error was related to ram failure. I decided to try a different download software to test the ram. This time I used memtest86. It's been running for over 4 hours now and has found 35 errors in ram! I plan to run it with each stick separately when this test is done to make sure which stick or if both sticks are bad. Guess even the name brand guys have problems. These are two sticks of Kingston 512, Hyper X with heat spreaders. Thanx for your help guys
