Odd connection problems

Well, it seems as though, my network items are having problems. I'm not sure what may have started it, but I think it may be a virus. I'm running WinXP Pro. I've ran two different virus scans (AVG, and Bit Defender), and they came up with nothing. The problem is, when I want to dial up to the internet, I double click on my connection icon, and nothing happens. I have also noticed that when I try to make a new internet connection, and I complete it, the icon doesn't appear in the network connections. Nothing appears in the network connections. The only way I can connect to the internet is if I have a program have the need to dial out for information and such. What in the world could cause this? A virus perhaps? Maybe, but any help is appreciated. Thank you.

well

I forgot to mention that my search ability has also been disabled. I cannot do the search command in the start menu. And when I connect to the internet, I do not see those two little computers flashing in the system tray. I think it could be virus related, but any other help is appreciated.

Fixed

Yay, I guess I had to reinstall WinXP Pro. That seemed to solve it. It may have been a Virus. Whatever it may have been, it is gone now.
