if I might make a small sugestion...
since you are doing this from the very beginning anyway and are out for a learning expiereance...why not install FreeBSD or some Linux distro? You will learn more and have a viable, modern OS to work with? just my 2 cents

Computer Hope is a marvelous site for information. If you don't mind a site that's slightly outdated (but would have all the details for your era PC), you can also look at http://www.pcguide.com/topic.html
It's the work of just one author, which explains why it's not updated as often as other guides, but it's nicely written, and allows you to read it just like a book: one step at a time. It generally starts with general info and then goes to more detail, which you can read or skip depending on your interest. There are also a few old-fashioned paperback books that are nice for a good foundation [and have the extra advantage of not needing a screen and power source to read] . . . one trick to finding a suitable into book is to visit your local community college & see which one they favor these days in the college book store. I'd recommend one, but it's been so long I don't know any of the recent titles. . . . and re: Linux. You'd probably want a version either at or before 6.1 (probably before - the "6" is from popular distributions like RedHat & isn't the same as the kernel version), since your hardware is limited. Might want to read up on it before that step at a place like http://www.linux.org Best of luck . . . Gary [p.s. ...I might not have been very clear. . . the guide that's on the outdated side is the pcguide site. Computer Hope is a big, well-funded & up-to-the minute updated site. . . . I could use a little updating myself!] Last edited by GaryRouth; 06-28-2003 at 07:29 PM. |
