Almost identical specs of my first build/testing pc. The 433mhz celeron came f rom my Gateway along with the same 10 gig HD.. Let me guess you bought it about 3 years ago. Both of which still work quite well and have proven quite dependable.

Well i orginaly posted this post to see if anyone would tell me if i had something decent or not. Which no one seems to have told me. And what is a testing computer? Things you try your junk on? I dunno. Well anyone else have a similar computer to this one? Its called an ASTRO And i did buy it 3 years ago as a matter of fact!

Well, it depends on what your using the computer for. That is an excellent Email/Web surfing box. It may also serve very well for "testing" purposes (e.g. trying out linux.)
Hope That Helps,
-Joe

My cousin wrote a genealogy book on a Commodore 64 computer, so if a computer does what you want it to do then can you really say it "sucks"?

Lets just say you can say it sucks if:....

1. it does the job but half assed
2. if it F*cking hates you
3. Boots but then shuts down because the system altered a boot file.
4. Crashes when you close out the "My Documents" window yes if i close any open system window thats been open for any amount of time it will CRASH my explorer. Its absoulte bull i swear it. I dont hate my computer i despise it because it does everything half assed.

If you mean it sucks for gaming, then yes. As for just surfing, emailing, typing, or experimenting, it looks like a nice little machine.

Yea, actually my roomates PC wich is sitting on the desk next to mine is a P1 133 with 96 RAM and it works fine for his e mail. Although it's getting slow on the web these days. Guess you could say he's old fashioned.

I guess i narrowed down a few things. This actualy made it faster by god! All i did was cancel out a few startup items about 26 of them to be exact and delelted some old startup entries and the computer seems to run fine. I dont have a long aticipated wait for apps to load because all of those things arent running. I guess i pays to clean out the junk.

Renamon, your PC is much better than my mom's PC. She has a Pentium Pro 266 mhz with 64 mb RAM and a 7.5 gb HDD. It is the slowest machine in the house now, but I remember when that thing beat the pants off of our IBM and Mac. When I saw that thing I thought SUPER MACHINE.

I don't think anybody has and older computer than an attorney I know from Mexico.

Must be a 386 33 MHZ, Monochromatic monitor, win 3.1, HD of less 500 MB for sure. it has a 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" DD drive, and an HP 840 inkjet printer. Even worse, he has no intentions of changing it, since it serves it's purporse. All he uses is MS Word. He never turns it off because it's too slow to startup.

Windows 3.1 ran quite nicely on my 486DX33. You forget that back then the world and Microsoft were still two separate entities.

My God some of you are young. Windows 3.1 was designed for a 33 Mhz machine. Each versions of Window has taken code bloat to greater and greater heights. What I find sad is that the functionality of the old machines (for every day use--not gaming) wasn't that much lower than the computers of today. The programmers just wrote tighter code. Of course, in those days memory was expensive and coding time was cheaper. Today it is just the opposite. Memory is cheap and programmers are expensive. So we put up with dirtier code by making our machines go faster.

Well my main issue in reguardiing this topic was to see if anyone was REGULARLY using a computer that was worse than mine most people say they know someone who is or has been using a computer with specs worse than these and by this i mean that they them selves may have been using one anyway. I found some information out reguarding my computer. Turns out this hunk of junk im running is actualy the premium edition of this line of computers I am running a Gateway ASTRO and this came from AVON yes sounds stupid but my grandmother sells AVON to AVON customers and she recieved this computer as a sales rep what ever that means. It was supposed to be her computer. It sat in the cow colored box for 5 months until i opened it up and plugged it in and started to use it. She kept saying i will learn to use it one of these days well.... one of these days has turned into about 3 years now so i dont think she has any intention of learning to use it now! The orginal computer like this was exactly half or less of what im running. The original astro came with a 4GB HD and had 64MB of PC100 SDRAM everything was integrated and came with a 16X cd-rom drive in it. So it wasnt exactly something that was good or anything it still had a Pentium Celeron processor in it MMX technologies 433MhZ!!! Anyway Reply Reply Reply!!

Earlier this year I retired a "worse" computer that served me faithfully for several years. A 166 K-6 with 64 mg of ram and a 4 gig hard drive. I had to upgrade only because it could no longer keep up with "advances" in browsers and AV software.

As I write, I am still using my old digital computer to check out RedHat Linux 8.0 (with all the updates.) I have increased the ram to 128Mg of PC-100. It is running fine, just don't ask it to do Gnome.
