Start up programs
I am running win2k on an Athlon 1700+ with 512Mb DDR ram and my computer takes forever to start up. I would approximate it at around 3 mins. I was told to run msconfig to find what programs run at startup and disable the ones I don't need to run. When I try to run it I get the error "cannot find file 'msconfig' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available." How do I fix this so that I can run msconfig? Do I need to repair/reinstall win2k or is it renamed in win2k? Thanks for any help!

Win 2000 doesn't have msconfig, but you can use this utility to do the same thing. HTH

I downloaded it and checked it out, thanks! It didn't seem like there were alot of programs there but I will restart the computer a few times to see if it helped. Any other ideas why this computer starts up so slow?

Have you checked for spyware? If not, download Ad-aware or Spybot S&D and make sure you don't have a bunch of junk on the computer.

yes, I have spybot and spyware blaster installed and use them regularly. I also use Norton AV and defrag weekly.

I do have a nic and am not on a network. In the systray I see an icon for the LAN and it says the network cable is unplugged. How do I stop it from checking that? Also, within the next month I will have this on a network, will that significantly slow my startup if I have the computer check for the LAN? Thanks!

Once your on a network it will probably speed up the boot up, as it won't spend so much time looking for something that is not there.
