newb to Windows XP Pro
Right now, I'm getting used to Windows XP and setting up all the user accounts. So far, I setup an Administrative account for me and a Limited account for my brother. Everything was fine until I tried installing Half-Life. I first installed it in my account and it worked perfectly fine. But when my brother tried playing it from his account, it didn't work. How can I make programs available for use by all users on my computer?
And to top that, I am having problems enabling Internet/file/printer sharing. I have an old Windows 98 system directly connected to the Net via dial-up. How do I connect my Windows XP Pro to it so that I can file, printer, and Internet share? I want to keep the 98 system directly connected by dial-up. How do I do this? |

You'll need a NIC card in each PC and a ethernet crossover cable and that will get U started as far as networking them. I've noticed most programs that U install on XP ask U during the installation process if U want to make them available to all users, so maybe a reinstall?????

im not sure how to file and printer share but, the game thing i do know.
Nowadays....certain game only allow to be played in and administrator account. if you trust your brother completely, give him an administrator account to. but if you dont, i think by setting your brothres account to power user(THIS WAY CAN OLY BE DONE IN XP PRO) should do the trick.(im not sure....can somebody back me up). This must be done in your admin account. rightclick mycomputer-> select manage->select local users and groups on the left panel-> open the users file-> rightclick your brothers account name(for example"mine is "rave")->select properties-> go to the member off tab-> select "add"-> select "advanced"-> select "find now"->highlight "power users" and press OK-> press ok again and your done. REMEMBER DO NOT REMOVE THE ADMINISTRATOR OF IN THE "MEMBER OFF TAB". |

With xp pro you can set permissions. You could give him the so-called "power user" treatment (I never saw this, but I do not mess with windows permissions) but then he would inherit all the permissions of a power user. God knows what those are.
You could just give him rights to a single folder (in this case "\Games" or "\Games\Sierra\" or whathaveyou). Right click folder->props->security. The rights should be self explanatory. Writing a new file is different than modifying an existing one, and full control grants the user the right to set his own permissions. Normally a user only has this right for his home ("my docs"). Pretty sure this should work, but like I said, I have never messed with windows permissions. He will probably need all rights except admin rights for a game directory. When I try right clicking on the folder Half-LIfe is in, it requires it to be moved to the other other hard drive where the shared folders are so I guess that won't work but I'm ok with it right now.
Here's another unrelated question: I installed Windows XP on my 120GB HDD. Is there a way to possibly move it to my second 36GB HDD? I doubt this is possible but I can only hope... |

Are both drives NTFS?
Rights do not work on FAT partitions. |

You have to copy the folder to the other harddrive with the other shared folders?
Well, that is retarded to say the least. I thought permissions were just stored in a table somewhere, not copied around. But what do I know? Anyway, make sure power users have write and/or modify rights. I think they are only given read, execute, and list. Basically, this makes him an administrator. ![]() You really should be able to do this with individual folders instead of having him inherit rights, but what do I know? Looks like no one else is gonna touch this thread, so here it goes.
It is pretty much the same as what I described before. Right click the folder/drive you wish edit the rights of. Goto security tab, then select the user. If you want all power users to have rights to that folder, then select power users. If you want just him to have rights to it, then edit COMPUTERNAME\USERNAME. Likewise you can edit COMPUTERNAME\Users and then all users will inherit these rights. It is a hierarchical setup if you think that way. I am not sure if setting the rights will recursively set them for all subdirectories. Like I said, I never messed with windows permissions. Hope someone will see this and do a better job, but if you have any questions, please ask. |

it tells me that I would have to trasfer the entire folder with the game in it to the Shared Documents folder. I'm not down with that. The game is even on the other hard drive.

Moving something to the Shared Documents folder doesn't actually move the file or folder. For example, the My Documents folder on my XP system is 450 megs. The same thing in Shared Documents is 89 megs. I don't know exactly what it does put in Shared Documents but it's apparently not the entire folder or file.
