cant setup home network
I'm having some problems setting up my home network. I'm trying to connect my Windows XP computer into my Windows 98 computer that is already directly connected to the Internet via dial-up. I want to enable file and printer sharing as well as Internet sharing. I tried running the Network setup wizard that is included on the Windows XP Pro CD but nothing works.
I have a sis 900 PCI NIC in my 98 system and a 3COM NIC intergrated into the motherboard (P4P800) in my XP system. They both are connected to a Netgear hub by network cables. One other problem that I have is that on the XP system, it says that a network cable is unplugged. I know that they are all plugged in. I even tried reinstalling the drivers for the NIC. What do you think is the problem? |

Do U see a link light on both Ports on that hub??? And a link light on both NIC's. I'll but U don't have link light on XP PC, could it be that U have a crossover cable in place??? U need 2 straight thru cables to go to the hub from each PC....Check that much out and post back and we'll go from there...

Yes, both link lights on the hub are lit as well as on each computer. The cables coming from the hub to the computers are not crossover cables I think. It says CAT5e Patch Cable on them if that helps. What do you think???

I think U are good to this point and we can go from here. U wouldn't get a link light if U had wrong type cable, so since the XP PC seems to think the network connection is unplugged lets start in there. On the desktop, right click the network icon and select properties, then right click the Local Area Network Connection and select status and see what is in there, and you'll notice there is a choice to repair if it is disabled and U can not enable it, then perhaps try this repair.

In the Network Connection folder, the little Local Area Connection icon says that a network cable is unplugged. And according to the Device Manager, it is working properly. When I select the Local Area Connection icon and try clicking on the repair in the left window, it says that TCP/IP is not supported. What do you think???

TCP/IP is installed by default on an XP pro install. Since you don't have a router in this configuration you will need to assign manual IP addresses to both of your machines. right click on your network connections on both machines and select properties. Then find TCP/IP, single click on TCP/IP and select properties. then, click the radio button "Use the following IP address" on the 98 machine use 192.168.0.1 and on the XP machine use 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 on both machines. also you need to make sure that the computer names are both different and you need to make sure they are in the same workgroup. then, reboot. goto network neighborhood and select "computers near me" If you see both machies your good to go. If not, you may need to swith hub ports on your XP machine until your "network cable is unplugged" error goes away. also you can try to ping the 98 machine by going to start/run on the XP machine and typing "cmd" and "ping 192.168.0.1" If all the packets are lost you need more help.
Just my 2 cents Andy |

I just yesterday got my very similar situation finally to work. I used a crossover cable and no hub, but mostly the same otherwise. It took quite a bit of changing settings and rebooting for me, and I'm still not exactly sure what did the final fix.
I knew I had to disable my XP firewall, but I had forgotten about my AV program's firewall as well. After moving my security setting down to medium, things began to go a bit better. Another thing that I think did it was to be sure both machines were obtaining IP addresses automatically. This did not work at first, but upon returning settings to this later, my network was recognized. The XP machine's TCP/IP settings should have DHCP enabled automatically, but you can check this in network properties/ TCP/IP / advanced. The 98 should also have this enabled. Go to your network folder, chose your TCP/IP network adapter / properties / WINS config / and select use DHCP there. It was very frustrating for several days, but after continual changes and reboots I finally got there. Good luck, and hope this is a help.

You would want to right click on your LAN and select properties. Here it will show the different items that connection uses. One of them should defiinitely be TCP/IP. If not, click Install / Protocol / and select it.
It probably is there. At that point, highlight it and click Properties. Here is where you should be able to edit the items as per above. |

Right under the window with all the installed protocols and services are 3 clickable buttons:: "install" -- "uninstall" and
"properties" ---- click on install, then it will prompt U for what U want to install and U want a protocol.. TCP/IP |
