safe mod -- reason why?

Is there a way to tell why my 98 box is starting up in safe mode?

It's an old PII Compaq and I was deleting files off the hard drive and apparently got rid of something I shouldn't have, or at least didn't get rid of it correctly. Is there somewhere I can find a boot log possibly with more detail on what's going on?

You may have deleted some driver files for your hardware is one guess.
Go into device manager and see if you have any Question marks or exclamation marks in there.

I just found the diagnostic mode in msconfig and it seems like I'm getting hung up on one of my mouse drivers. Of course the last thing I had deleted before the problems was some mouse software as I wanted to install new drivers for the mouse I'm currently using.

Now the question is can I fix or should I just go ahead and wipe the drive and install linux

Now that's odd, if I go through the diagnostic startup and click "Y" for every line windows loads up normally, but otherwise I still go into safe mode.

Also the line I mentioned before is the driver "msmouse.vxd" which is in my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder and is definitely not something I deleted before.

Well, I'm gonna go check my device manager...

Run System File Checker to find if any system files are missing. Also, it wouldn't hurt to look at your autoexec.bat file to see if something mysterioulsy changed (which has happened).

I checked out the autoexec.bat, not sure what it looked like before but everything seemed ok. I even tried booting up without with no luck.

Err...how do I run the System File Checker, I've never heard of that?

Do you want to consider a repair by installing Windows on top of itself?
Another way would be to scan your Win98 cd for the missing mouse driver, (should be in a cab folder), and you can extract it to your C:\Windows\System folder.

Unfortunately I had the system given to me and have no way of reinstalling windows on it. I'm tending to doubt that whatever is missing will be easily recoverable. I was hoping that windows looking for something that it thought it needed but really didn't and if I could I could find out what I could tell it to stop looking.

Anyway I'm not to broken up about it, this isn't my main rig. I just took a break to go barbacue some supper and decided I am gonna give linux a swing, I've got a slackware 9.0 cd ready to go. Wish me luck.

And thanks for all the suggestions

DOH!

Amazing how simple a solution can be and how easily overlooked

Oh well it's too late now, I already wiped the hard drive and installed slackware. It was very cathartic for me actually

Thanks anyway everyone.
