Dual boot w/ 98se and Xp
I have 98se on my computer and I now have the Windows xp pro that I want to add as a dual boot. Can someone please give me step by step instructions so that I make sure I don't just install over 98se. I should be able to choose the partition somewhere in setup right? Has someone actually done this and have any advice for me?
Thanks, Jeremy |

Yes. It is easy.
If you have a secondary partition, say D:, you just insert the WinXP CD and reboot. Make sure you have the CD as primary boot device set in the BIOS configuration. If you do, then upon booting the WinXP installer will start and installation will begin. You will be prompted to select a partition to install (here you *MUST* choose D:) and you even can format that partition with NTFS. Doing this will erase all info on the partition, so make sure you have your data backed up if you want to do this. Also, Win98 won't see NTFS partitions so, if you need to access data on the XP partition, leave things untouched and proceed to install XP without formatting the partition. It then will use the existing FAT32 file system already on the partition. When the installation is done WinXP will create a boot.ini file that every time you boot will ask you which OS would you like to run. It's that easy!

Thanks for the help and replies. I already had 2 hard drives with a total of 4 partitions, so when I did the XP install, I checked a box at the beginning that allowed me to later on choose the partition to install on. I chose to do the clean install instead of the upgrade, and I chose the correct partition and it worked great!

Neat!
And wise decision: a fresh install is way better than the upgrade. |
