cant share internet
I have two computers that are connected to each other via hub. One of them is running Windows 98(non SE) and the other is running Windows XP Pro. I am having trouble accessing the Internet with the XP machine. The 98 computer is the one connected to the Internet directly. They can properly share files and printers but I can't use the Internet in the XP one. What is the problem?
and on a side note. I was setting up a LAN game of Brood War and I learned that the XP machine does not support IPX protocol. This unables me from setting up a game. Is there a way to make it work? Last edited by ACLerok; 07-04-2003 at 07:19 PM. |

I believe the way you have it set up you need a program like
Wingate or Sygate Home Network. |

If you have a high speed connection (DSL or cable) you need a router or a second IP address from your internet provider to use the hub.
If you are on dial-up the easiest way would probably be as gbrike suggested. Chas

As Confused said, you can't share an internet connection through a hub alone.
You can try to use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the 98 system but it's not the best solution and most people have endless problems with it. I agree with Confused...if you have a broadband connection (cable or DSL) go ahead and buy a router which will let you not only keep your home network (sharing files and folders) but will also let you share the internet connection with the least amount of hassle and the most amount of trouble-free surfing. Since you already have a hub, you can save a little money by buying a one- port router. Folllowing the instructions that come with the router, plug the computers into the hub, then the hub and the modem into the appropriate ports, configure the router once and you'll be good to go. Microsoft says that IPX can be installed on XP: Control Panel/Network Connections, right click on the network connection you use, choose Properties. Click on the "Install" button, then Protocol/Add, then the entry for IPX, then OK . Whether it will work is another question altogether.
