using msconfig to stop uneeded programs from starting is a good first step and defragging your HD helps alot too

your boot time is actually pretty good. if you have AV running automatically at start it can slow things down...(like toomyg stated, you can disable it in msconfig) also spyware and adware detectors can take up time.

Make sure the Quick POST option is enabled in BIOS.
Set the hard drive as the first boot device in BIOS. Keep the number of programs that start up with Windows to a absolute minimum...only applications that you really need should be loading up and showing up in the Systray. Keep the number of Fonts installed to a minimum. Having hundreds of Fonts will slow the boot process. Set the minimum and maximum size of the swapfile to lock it in instead of allowing it to be dynamic. Keep the recycle bin and temp folders clean. Make sure your drivers are all up to date. Keep the number of desktop icons to a minimum. Use a simple desktop wallpaper. Remove the speaker icon from the Systray...there are other ways to adjust volume. If you have Office installed, make sure Find Fast is not enabled. Don't use Task Manager or Task Scheduler unless you absolutely have to. Defrag your hard drive regularly. Cricket

and also, 53sec isnt bad. im assuming its either a P2 or P3 or Athlon under 1.0GHz so that aint bad. I saw(not mine) a Athlon XP 2200+ with 480MB DDR PC2100 with 98SE boot in 20sec. with that same system (only 256MB DDR tho) 95OSR2 took 12.1sec to boot.

Last K6-2 computer I worked on was a 500Mhz, 128MB PC100, new 7200 RPM HDD, Win98 and it took over a minute to reach the Windows desktop after installing the OS to the brand new HDD. Was a real big improvement from the Pentium 100Mhz with 32MB FPM RAM and 5400 RPM HDD the system originally had though...in that configuration, the system took almost 2 minutes to reach the Windows desktop. If you're on a network, it's going to take longer as well.

Why are you so concerned with how long it takes your computer to boot up? Once it has Windows loaded up, doesn't it run well? That's all that matters. Cricket

If your system is running well, I wouldn't do anything. No need to fix something that isn't broken. Cricket
