expanded memory

My brother just bought a new Gateway computer with Windows XP. We play the old dos game "Seawolf" over phone line. When he tries to load the multiplayer program, he gets the error message "not enough expanded memory". The game documentation says it requires 3072K of expanded memory to play. How do you adjust EMS in WinXP without having to use a boot disc?

Sorry I can't give U specifics, but I would venture to say it has to be loaded in sys.ini, or win.ini.

Find the game's executable file (e.g. Seawolf.exe) and right- click on the file, and choose Properties.
Click the Memory tab.
Set all of the values in the drop boxes to the highest value available.
Make sure that the Protected and Uses HMA boxes are checked.
Apply and OK the changes.

I know it's a DOS game. I was suggesting an answer to your question about allocating more memory to it.

True, Windows XP is not built on a DOS core, but it has a DOS virtual machine for running old 16-bit games.

Are you running SeaWolf under XP or Win95/98? Not all DOS games will work under XP Compatibilty Mode.

Read this article for an explanation of Compatibility Mode and tweaking the memory settings.

http://www.zdnet.com.au/itmanager/te...65375-2,00.htm

As the man says, not all DOS games will work under XP. It really is trial and error.

Have him try Win95 and Win98 modes and see if one of them works.
