MS-DOS games under Windows XP

Has anybody out there had success installing MS-DOS games on Windows XP? I have some old DOS games I'd love to start playing again but I can't get them to run at all.

Games in question: Silent Hunter and Dragon's Lair among others

Thanks!

you are out of luck. You must have win 98/95. Make dual booting. I am not sure longhorn will be the same as xp

Some games work. Some others don't.

Most of them work without sound. But when you try to configure the sound problems start. The reason is that Win2k and XP retain full control of the HW and won't allow any application to access the HW directly, as Win9x OSes do.

This results in a safer and more stable OS, since apps are less likely to crash it, but the cost is most DOS apps will work with no sound or won't work at all.

PS: You can still have sound only if you select PC Speaker. But that depends on your ears. Myself, I didn't put up with that chunky sound.

This site lists many games compatible with NT, 2000, and XP, nice place to find out if a game will run on one of these operating systems

Ya, that is a very useful site. It doesn't only list games but apps and hardware as well.
