DOS issues

I have XP pro and I have found that when I open DOS, the following error message comes up

An Extendable Memory Manager is already installed.
XMS is not installed.

The DOS window then closes itself. I have found ways to stop it closing, however when I try and run a C program for example it still closes. I have searched the net for a solution and it seems that XP automatically loads XMS at start up which explains the first line, however the problem of the second line still remains.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since Windows XP doesn't have DOS, exactly what are you doing to get these errors? Do they appear when you open a command prompt, when you run a very old DOS-based program, or what?

you can run your dos program from windows explorer. just right click on the file and click on the compatibility tab. you will find options on how to run the program. just select the windows 95 option which is not much different than dos.
