Ever a Reason NOT to get Windows Update?
When XP checks for and finds "new updates ready to check and download," is there ever a time not to take up the offer?

Just read carefully the description of the update and see if you really need it.
And make a system restore point b4 installing anything. Myself, I disabled the Windows Updater.

Just speaking personally, I would be judicious about which updates to install. If everything is working fine and there are no specific glaring security vulnerabilities which need to be patched I would leave it as it is. I have spent a lot of time with customers undoing the damage caused by XP service pack updates that have either gone wrong or had unexpected results. On a more mundane level, I let windows update do its thing with a very minor update some months ago, and ever since I get an error when I try to save an entire webpage whilst connected to a network.
If it keeps bugging you there is a registry fix you can apply to get rid of the update notifications. |

I disable automatic downloading of updates. I check once a week manually, and I don't install something unless I need it. For example, I still haven't installed SP1 because of the horror stories I have heard.

I agree. I wouldn't automatically download everything that MS churns out. Better to download updates to fix problems "when and if" they are "absolutely" necessary.
If it ain't broke, then don't fix it. Here's a prime example http://www.updatexp.com/q811493.html |

Just to clarify on what Nuclear Krusader said:
Any update to the system automatically creates a system restore point for you. I personally patch everything that M$ throws in criticals. |

Right now, I have two security updates sitting in que. One says Security Update M$ Windows, the other says exactly the same thing except with XP behind it. Both were automatically checked. If not listed as critical, just decline?
Also, what's the best way to disable automatic checks in XP? Thx. |

best to just disable autoupdate and do it manually once a week, this way you can pick and choose which ones you want. You can go to www.grc.com and make xp sp1 compliant without ms,personally everyone should lock the raw sockets in xp.Right click my computer, properties, autoupdate, check disable autoupdate

Read through the download descriptions.
Only install the ones that apply to you.

Microsoft has too much faith in their Anti-Piracy. I know alot of people that use a hacked version. Their keys aren't blacklisted or legal. Windows Update lets them update every time.
I turn off auto-update, but visit the site regularly. I turn it off because it usually pops up while I'm gaming or doing something else, and dont want to be bothered. I rarely download the Drivers they offer, since they are usually older (but signed) drivers than what's offered on the web. A couple games even refused the current Windows drivers at the time (like Wolverine's Revenge). They should disable the need for signing and all that crap. It was designed so that drivers would be compatible with XP, but XP has been out for awhile now. Companies release XP-compatible drivers regularly. Just MS wanting to control our lives even more I guess.... |

Not likely they will hear our plea and remove their spyware or even disable it by default during the installation.
Longhorn will come bloated with spyware I presume.

Whats the big deal about spyware? Just remove it. Alexa is the only Windows XP spyware and I removed it manually.

The code named "longhorn" OS is set for 2005.
I'm holding off till I see what I'll need ( in-between will be the amd/intel 3.0 stuff). But the real upgrading will depend on what gets supported. I've never had to figure out a technology jump with my own cash before, this should get interesting. |

Never do automatic updates from MS, instead manually go to the site and read, read, read! It will save you from ending up with stuff like messenger, .net, and copy protection for media files.

I agree, go read first. You can "personalize" your update on the Update main page. Left column has that option. Let's you permanently unselect items like .Net and other languages you don't want on your system.

Ever wonder why your system seems to get slower and slower over time. All the sludge that accompanies non-critical updates is one (but not the only) reason. Be very careful when deciding what to update, or you will be wanting a faster processor sooner than later.
