xp software shut's down my puter

i have a problem, i start up my puter and while it's on the logon screen it says window's is shuting down. then the puter turn's off. i had a compaq service center check it out and they say it's a software problem, they installed another hard drive with an os and it worked fine. and they said to use my restore disk to restore it back to win.me, i upgraded to xp 8 months ago with no problem's. and then to reinstall xp. that's a lot of work and data that's lost, anyone ever herd of this problem, i checked with microsoft and didn't come up with anything. tks sling

Just boot with the XP cdrom and do a repair installation...

i tried that and eather it wouln't boot from cd or it didn't work to repair it. all i know is that i put in the xp upgrade disk and nothing happened and window's xp shut down and the puter shut off. tks sling

boot the comp and press f8 just affter the bios check befor windows is loading and try to boot to safe moad when in safe moad click start run msconfig and go to the start up tab and untick every thing except sys tray hit apply and reboot if win xp wont load in safe moad or still shuts down post back
