XP SP1: Yes or No?

I bought XP shortly after it came out. Used it just like everyone else does, liked it, and upgraded to SP1 when it was released. My system took a turn for the worst when SP1 was installed, slowing down and generally 'polluting' my computing experience. So I removed it. Some of you may know that I purchased a new hard drive and loaded windows XP onto it. I've downloaded all the Update files off Windowsupdate.com except Sp1. So, my question:

What are your opinions about SP1? Is it worth trying again? Is it really any use to bother downloading and upgrading? I read somewhere that even some MS techs don't approve of SP1.
Thanks

I have run XP SP1 since it was available and had no problems with it, however I don't use the "Express Install" which most people have had issues with. I recommend using the Network install version which has not been any trouble except for the download size if you are on dialup and can be downloaded here

I've stayed away from any Microsoft SP's due to a similar bad experience a while back... I now just let Windows figure out which updates I need, then I choose which ones to download...

It's almost one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" sort of things...

Good luck

never download the updates unless you have a spicific problem that it corrects

I disables that function on all my systems

to fix, just do a restore to a date before all the updates to see which one is causeing all your problems

I don't use system restore. I turned it off lol

Can't I choose the Service Pack 1a from the Add/Remove programs list and uninstall it?

there is nothing wrong with sp1, most of the problems are with the other updates.

sp1 should be installed before any other programs are installed.

I have SP1 slipstreamed to my Windows XP installation CD and all the systems I have installed it onto don't seem to have any problems at all.

I've been using SP1 since it came out and had no problems, and all of my friends who run XP also upgraded to SP1, and actually it seems to be even more stable than before. I've slipstreamed XP and SP1 and it works great too.
Everyone I know who is running XP+SP1 says it rocks.

Hm... then perhaps my problem is elsewhere... I don't know where...

I've noticed 2 drastic changes since changing drives and upgrading to SP1 (ive installed XP countless times before, I didn't mess up the install)

1. Whenever extracting files with WinRAR, my system would slow to a crawl. Explorer especially. Before, I could freely move around at top speed. My sytem randomly locks up as well. It goes away after 15 seconds or so, but its annoying.

2. While Trillian's connectivity to the various chat mediums can be spotty at times, I've never encountered the sudden complete drops like I do now. For some reason, I'll lose all connections to all mediums for no reason (the lights on my cable modem are still flashing, indicating its working and transferring properly) and Winamp will lose its radio streaming. I have no idea what I broke, then again, I didn't install the Cox HSI software this time either....

P.S: When I try uninstalling SP1 via Add/Remove programs, It pops up a nice lengthy list of programs, telling me that if SP1 is removed, these programs might not work properly. They are the programs I have installed after SP1. Is it safe to ignore the message? Will everything still work?

ON of the keys I found to a sucessful install of SP1 was to download it first and then install it versus doing it with windows update.

uninstalling SP1 from the control panel uses system restore to return the computer to the pre SP1 state. You will probably have to reinstall anything you have installed since then.

You want USB 2.0, you have to load SP1. It's the only source unless someone knows how to extract it!

What about using the Repair feature in Windows? That'd get rid of SP1 and all my updates.... as well as all my tweaking..hmmm
