Single beep at Welcome Screen

Hi all,
PC seems to freeze at the Welcome screen in XP Pro. It also sounds a single beep. If I CTRL, ALT, DELETE it thens continues to load. Thought this may be K/B problem, so changed with another and tried different port (PS2 also).

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Keep tapping the F8 key during Bootup and from the menu choose Safe Mode. If XP starts in Safe Mode OK, then that points to a device driver, program, or service causing the problem at Startup.

Have you installed any new programs or Hardware prior to the problem appearing?

Can you give us your system specs and what type of BIOS you have - Award, Phoenix, AMI?

Need system Specs, usually when you see this you have a program or device driver that is trying to load before it should. Sound Blaster cards that have all the software installed will do this.

how long do you wait, if the motherboard has a nic and it is not connected it will search for any kind of network before continuing, sometimes takng several min.

Do you have a small home/office network set up??

I posted a similar problem last night. Was getting a single beep and a freeze. ctl/alt/del would free it but the desktop would not be completely available for about 30 seconds or so (taskbar freeze). Thought it was Mcafee, but the halt appears to be my computer starting its network services. Anybody know how to speed up starting tcpip services and such????

I have DSL on my PC, running Xp pro. What I did to speed up boot time was to open tcp/ip properties, and change my pc's IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.100. My boot up and shut down times after that were cut in half.

Just tried to start in safe mode and BINGO. It works. Funny thing thou, when I went to restart, it didn't do anything, not even tried to boot. After a couple of resets it started to boot up. What I did notice was that the K/B Numbers lock indication didn't come on. I did try another K/B but that did the same thing. I've downloaded the lastest K/B drivers, still the same.

I haven't got a network setup.

Very strange.

Thanks for the responses.

If it's starting in Safe Mode, then simplest thing to try next is a System Restore
