Can't Reassign Drive Letters
How come XP won't let me reassign my drive letters in Admin tools>computer management? I tried to reassing my primary drive "F" to "C" and secondary drive from "C" to "F".
When I installed my new had I put it to master because it was bigger and my smaller drive to slave. My smaller drive was my primary before I installed the knew one and already had XP installed. This became a problem because when I was installing a program I downloaded it wanted to install it to "C" when "F" is the primary and the one I'm currently using. Can anyone help me figure what the deal is Thanks

"F" to "C"
Won't let you do it if C is already there. Change C to K or any other letter F to C K back to F |

If F is your system drive [where xp is installed] you cannot change a system drive letter. Even if you did, you would end up with problems. Programs you installed prior to changing the letter will look for system / dll files in "F" and they are now in C.

I decided to leave everything alone. My slave HD has XP installed. That was the primary before I put in the bigger one. I felt it was better to leave my original HD intact rather than deleting everything one I had the bigger HD installed, this way here if I had a problem I could boot to the slave drive instead.
My whole thing about changing letters was because when i went to download a program it wanted to run it to the C: drive which is now the slave drive. I figured it would recognize the F: drive now as my master and install the program there. What I found out is when I went to change the drive letters from the master drive say "C" to "G" it would change, but when you booted to the slave drive the drive letter stayed "C". and visa vers if I changed "F" to "C" from the slave drive it would stay "F" when I booted back to the master drive. So I guess changing it makes no sense so I left everything alone. |
